Fall Foliage Coloration Guide – Tree and Leaf Color’s
Autumn is approaching quickly and soon nature will be turning the tree’s from green to a wonderful display of multi-colors. Fall is one of the most colorful times of the year with the leaves turning beautiful shades of red, yellow, orange, purple and browns. In case you ever wondered what actually turns the leafs all those beautiful colors – it’s a process called “photoperiodism.”

As the sun moves further south, the hours of daylight shorten and the temperatures fall. This causes leaves to cease production of chlorophyll, the chemical that colors leaves green. As the chlorophyll disappears, the underlying colors of the leaves are unmasked. The next strongest pigment becomes dominant giving the leaves a “new” color.
